Anyone modify there factory premium sound rear speaker boxes?

I searched and found almost nothing about this on here.

I did this about 7 or so years ago.

It's a 6.5" Sony A$$plode where the original speaker was. It sounded way better than the blown factory speaker that was there. That said, it still has that "Hollow Mid-base Boomy-ness" that these speakers where known for from the factory.

I think this may be caused by the plastic enclosure being so thin that it resonates with the speaker. That or there is some type of low pas filter in the factory harness. I was thinking of pulling them back apart and sound deadening them from the inside to see if it helps with the "Midbase Boom"

So....

1. Has anyone else replaced the factory speaker in these boxes with an aftermarket unit?

2. Did it still have that "Hollow, Mid-base Boom"

3. Did you do anything to get rid of it, like sound deadening the enclosure or rewiring them to eliminate a low pas filter hiding in the harness?

I have a set and most of the harness, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

It would be sweet of 6.5's would fit, that is what I had in the wooden speakerboxes I made in shop that I got tired of squeaking on my bucket sets.

With a full steel cab the radio always has had a different sound to it

They will.
You will have to enlarge the hole a little, but that's not hard at all.

Sound deadening the enclosure should help with the "boomyness". Also, try stuffing it full of polyfill. (pillow stuffing) That may help dampen the speaker some and fixing that hollow midbass problem.

Agreed! I've put stuffing in every box I've owned.
