Anyone have any tricks on getting rid of wasps?

I saw that episode. I cant even begin to imagine having that many wasps around . There were several thousand. I had no idea they could build like that.

I'm sure thankful we get a winter here to kill them off every year. That was a big problem in that house.

Pffft - you want the real good one - listen up. It's simple. You get you a fairly large plastic cup. You put 2/3'rds of good all water in it. Then you fill it up with the strongest detergent you can find. Dish soap works well. Man-up and approach the nest and throw it over them. They'll drop like flies. The surfactant covers up their breathing holes. It's environmentally safe and works like a charm if you're brave enough to go and do it. I've killed thousands of yellow jacket nests like that and never had a prob - providing you can run fast enough to get past the first few. Topher, where are you?

I'll tell you that I am a lot braver than I was a couple years ago. I used to only do it at night when they don't leave the nest. That's the 2nd suggestion for soap and water which is kid friendly. I have a 22 month old that is very curious. She tries to catch the things, which I am not thrilled about.

And yeah.... where is Topher? If I had to guess, I would say messing with his new tools.

i cant believe that guy killed those honey bees.

dumb asses.....they would have left within a day or so...

that was an expensive amount of honey bees they killed. they could have easily contacted a honey bee farmer and they would have made money off them. instead they basically burned money...

The catholics used to burn them. Not sure if that applies

Ive used the ole soap and water thing for a few years and it seems to work well!!! Just make sure u hit all of them b/c there always seems to be one that you will miss lol. I put mine ina cup and walk up there and throw it one them.

I work at Ace and can be pretty helpful on this topic. If theyre making nests in the ground, use Bayer 2 in one insect granulars, you spread it on your yard and its made to kill Cicada killers and other ground bees and insects.

As far as nests above ground. I can recommend a good propane torch...lol

I can torch some of them. About 75% of them are on my wood deck or vinyl siding though. I always thought they liked wood and metal for a surface. I also had a woodpecker pecking at my vinyl siding last year. I didn't think it looked that real. Lol

I was working putting siding on a new house way back before I got a few brain cells. There was a wasp nest built under the deck. All I had with me at the time was wd-40. It didn't seem to kill them when sprayed on, so I decided to use a lighter and flambe' the suckers. Damn if that brand new wooden deck soaked in light oil didn't decide to catch on fire. A hectic 10 minutes of throwing sand on the fire and I got it out! Thankfully the ground in that area was all sand and small rocks. As I was covering the underside of the deck with aluminum soffit material anyway, nobody saw the soot marks and I still got paid for the job. The moral of the story is; be careful if using fire.
Another thing that I've heard is that wasps are territorial, so if there is an empty nest, or fake one, they won't build nearby. I've seen fake ones for sale at Canadian Tire.
Good luck,

Richard

I bet that scared the holy crap out of you for a minute. I've definitely put myself in situations like this before, LOL.

Now this is one hell of an idea. I wanted to be able to put be proactive rather than reactive with these things; in other words keep the little bastards from even starting the nest to begin with. I researched a bit and found these:

Now, call me dumb; but all of the nests I've seen and taken out look like this:

I am assuming this is just a start to the larger "hive" looking thing? When I google "wasp nest" I get pictures of both. I've never seen one of those hive looking things around here before. Maybe because the winter kills them off?

The ones I see around here are smaller versions of the one under the umbrella in your pic, though I've seen as big as a football in the wild.
