IIRC, the 99-00 Rangers with a v-6 are arguably the easiest to do fuel injected 5.0 swaps, the automatics being the easiest. If you can find the right donor (99-01 Explorers). We did it with dad’s 00 Ranger and a 99 Explorer donor, largely plug and play. We left it auto and AWD. Biggest issues were exhaust (we used everything from the cats forward and had a custom exhaust shop do the rest), one motor mount (drivers side, we marked and drilled the plate on the motor), and splicing about 5 wires (mostly climate control). If we kept our foot out of it, it was doing 17/18 around town, 15 if you were heavy on the skinny pedal.
I am currently working on doing it to one of my trucks, just advanced a few steps with headers and whatnot. Also going to use 3.73 gears on 31’s instead of 4.10 with 30’s and give it a tune. Throw in a few other goodies and I’m hoping for some respectable mileage and a lot of fun.
Interestingly enough, my 4.0 powered Bronco II on 35’s is actually rather respectable. Well, when it’s run anyway. That truck seems to like eating motors. But at any rate, it has headers and a bit of a port job on the heads and despite 4.10’s, 35’s and a packed limited slip rear, it will light both back tires in first if encouraged and chirp second. A supercharger and some other mods could probably do wonders for any v-6
