Anybody use security cameras in/on their house?

I never lock my cars because I'd much rather a thief just open the door to steal the 38 cents from the ash tray than break my window. You're not stealing the car with anything short of a flatbed anyway.

I don't lock my house because if your dumb enough to just walk into my house you deserve to be killed and eaten by dogs and pigs, I have plenty of signs warning of such impending doom. :dunno:

We have cameras, but the pieces-o-crap that ripped us off wore hoodies and crept around so all we had is proof that there were two of them and time and date. One of them is seen unscrewing the flood light in the carport. I asked the cop if he was going to check for prints and he just sort of laughed. Social media is full of pictures/videos of thieves in hoodies asking "do you know this person". Main use of the camera's now is watching the coyotes sniffing around the chicken coop at night.

Yes, "Security" Camera is a bit of a stretch, especially if they are visible cameras(can be seen) because thieves will make sure faces are covered and clothing is generic
But visible cameras can, for sure, be a deterrent for casual "thieves"

Hidden cameras can work but a "professional thief" would always try to keep face and clothing generic
I used to install hidden cameras in business, bars and lounges usually, but to watch the staff at the tills mostly
These recordings are not admissible in criminal cases in most areas but can be used in "wrongful dismissal" cases
The reason they are not admissible in criminal cases is because there must be a sign posted that you are being video recorded if you are in a place where you are legally allowed to be, and no cameras are visible, if other cameras are visible then hidden camera video is usually admissible, even though they don't show up on a security camera monitor.

So staff member would be shown the video of them pocketing money instead of ringing it in, and fired, if they tried to get a wrongful dismissal case started then that video could be used as owner's defense in the dismissal.

But in general cameras are better than no cameras, it may not "catch" thieves, but it may, and being able to look back at what was going on around your home after something, anything, happens is better than not having that option

If you can see it. Anyone can.

May or may not be used against you.

In the court of bob.....or law.

We have this Reolink unit. Solar powered, reasonable cost, and works well.

something tells me that the Court of Bob will be very Darwinian.... :p

Fun fact. Cameras steal your soul...

The person I lived with for nine months when I first moved to the town I live in was like that. After I moved into my own place, I was tempted to walk into her house one night, grab the keys to her car, and park the car in my driveway. I suppose if I wanted to be nice, I could have just moved the car a few feet (like parking it on the street in front of her house).
You thought she should be punished for being trusting?

Why should everyone else be punished for her being trusting?

She gets robbed because she can't bother to put her keys inside and then everyone else's insurance rates in the neighborhood go up...

I'd rather see the thieves punished than the victims.

I think there is some possible liability if you don’t have some sort of notification posted about cameras being on the property. It may be a state by state thing. I put up the stickers that came with the cameras right where they can be plainly seen. So even if they try to claim they didn’t see the camera, they can’t say they weren’t notified. I think it falls under the “single party” rule when it comes to recordings but I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure PA is a state that people have to be notified they are being recorded.

Notification is only required if the person being videoed has permission to be on your property, i.e. at a business or "public" area

At your home or on private property no notification is required since there is no expectation of privacy when you are trespassing, lol
But "Protected by video surveillance" signs can be a deterrent to casual thieves or "lookers"

Technically if your home cameras can "see" sidewalks and streets, public access areas, there should be a sign, but now-a-days that's overlooked and these security videos are used in court cases, criminal and civil
