Anybody see these before?

You say these are highway on ramps, is this part of the interstate highway system? If it is, I have NO PROBLEM with the gates, as the original intent of the interstate system is for facilitating commercial transportation, it would provide key ground transport routes for military supplies and troop deployments in case of an emergency or foreign invasion.
Using it to go to Disney land is a low priority.

I couldn't agree more.

Pedestrians
Bicycles
non motorized traffic
motor bicycles
prohibited

And there you are.

If any of the afore-mentioned traffic tries to enter, the lights flash red and the gates come down blocking access.

See? A very simple explanation. :icon_thumby:

They're for severe winter weather. They close the limited-access roads to traffic so they can pool snow-removal resources to keep local roads open. They're all over the western US in less-populated areas.

Oilpatch, the Interstate highway system was designed not for commerce, but for ease of military materiel transport. Commerce and civilian use is secondary, and access for both would cease immediately in the event of national emergency.

I still think it's crazy. After so many years of living with snowy highways... Like I said, highways around here are much safer than city and county roads in the winter because they keep up with the salt and plowing on the highway. Besides, that's the way the majority of people get to work. Now whenever they feel it necessary to close the highway, I guess there will be alot of people calling off work, or coming in late. I could see this kind of thing down in milwaukee, though I haven't seen any, but not out in the country.

I think they'll find out that for every one accident they prevent on the highway by using these, they'll create 5 more on county roads.
