Any tricks to flushing a Steering rack?

Previous owner of my explorer let the truck suck something into the fluid that is most likely in the rack now (Drove it with no cap like an Dingus).... Suggestions?

At the moment I'm planning on just pulling the return hose off the Res. and going lock to lock while feeding it fluid...

And whats the cheapest fluid to do this with safely? Trans fluid? (Just to flush it, not to fill it)
 
That's exactly the way I've always done it. One LARGE container filled with clean fresh fluid, one for waste. I would use the correct fluid, to avoid possible lubrication issues.

And for the life of me, I don't recall if there's a mesh inline filter on ours or not.
