Any Electricians out there?

From a student who has to purchase a lot of tools for his education, I highly suggest that you keep all of your receipts. Tools used for school can be written off on taxes. I picked up a Fluke Multimeter a year or two ago and I absolutely love it, very easy to use and they are excellent when it comes to their product being safe. I bought mine with the school cause we were getting a few new ones for our training ship and got a pretty good deal on it.

I was a electrician apprentice for 5 months and i learned alot. However it sucked low pay for extreme work. Well the guy i worked for had us (crews of 2) wiring up 2 story houses in sometimes 6-7 hours. I also got stuck with a journey man who likes to scream alot and was pissed off if we worked past 2:30.

I know Kleins a good brand, but the price makes me stray away.

Once I get thinking about it, price vs quality will become an issue. Should I buy a pair of pliers cheap that will last me a few years, or a pair that will last quite a few.. probably the second one.

Digging up an old thread here. Oh well.

I found a college, SUNY Delhi in NY. It's about 30-40 miles away, which isn't too bad. They offer a program called Electrical Construction and Maintenance for an Associates degree. Got accepted too. :icon_thumby:

I received my tools list, which is what inspired me to look back on this thread. I'm going to be nervous as hell when I go out to buy the tools, and probably indecisive as to what brand to buy.

I'm thinking Craftsman for the major stuff, but I will probably end up going with Cobalt. What do you guys think?

I can tell you this. The Craftsman and Cobalt tools won't stand up to the abuse and needed uses that the Klein stuff does. First thing if it's on the list I'd get if I did it all again would be Klein 9 inch linesman pliers. Anything else other than strippers can be whatever you can afford. Screwdrivers are screwdrivers no matter whose name is on them really.

Yeah what Roadkill said.Craftsman electrical tool suck monkey balls.Whoever does their tools don't have to use them. The cutting surfaces are dull.Klein or even Ideal stuff is the way to go for electrical tools. For screwdrivers I prefer a 4/6 in one type.Less tools to carry. Also never go cheap on power tools.
Good luck

go for industrial training, it will give you the most options in the future. you may also want to look into industrial instrumentation. you would deal with transmitters/valves some programming PLCs & DCS.

good luck.
