Any benefit besides sound?

Good thread......

Lots of interesting reading in this thread, with
differing viewpoints and technical reasons given to
back them up.

I recently installed a Dynomax cat-back on my
3.0 and was confused with Ford's choice of
intermediate and tailpipe size. The intermediate
(after cat) was 2" and the tailpipe was 2 1/4"'.
It seems to me the pipe sizes should have been
reversed, with the larger pipe after the cat and
the smaller after the muffler.

I can think of two possible reasons for this, one is to somehow
compensate for the relative high restriction of the
muffler, and the other being lower cost of the smaller pipe....?

Anyway, I could definitely feel a difference after the cat-back
installation. It wasn't psychological, I could really feel the easier
revving and the vehicle held OD longer on the hills around
my neighborhood.

I'm still checking the mpg, but hoping for an increase given
the lesser restriction of the exhaust system now......

I picked the gibson single swept cat back since the dual pipe one calls for finding a new home for the spare tire.
I've got no hard data, but before I added the fipk and exhaust I had a certain mile long hill me and the camper could only manage 43mph foot to the floor in 3rd and after we got almost a 10mph gain. I could care less about mpg :)
Plus she sounds bigger ! Although the wife liked it better when it had the quieter stock exhaust on.

I wasn't looking for better gas mileage when shopping for a new exhaust - I was looking for sound. If you want gas mileage and performance, I'd look into Borla Exhaust Systems.

My Ranger was getting about 15 miles per gallon city before I installed my new Borla muffler. After installing it, my miles per gallon went up to 18. I was thrilled about this, especially since I was just looking for sound. Another added bonus was the performace. I could feel more torque and horsepower the instant I drove it.

I'll admit, it wasn't the cheapest exhaust. I could have gotten a $30.00 Cherry Bomb but I researched and shopped around for months and I finally found what I was looking for. The muffler ran me around $140.00 or so w/ all the clamps and etc. It has a million mile warranty, and is made of stainless steel. Not to mention it looks pretty good from underneath - especially with a nice coat of polish on it.

All in all, I am 100% sold. I will continue to buy Borla parts for all of my vehicles. If you are interested in quality, performace, fuel economy and sound, I'd definately look at the Borla Exhaust line.
