Another rear shackle flip question

ok so i want to do a 64 in shackle flip but i have a question about the rear shackle why is it ran 180degrees upside down wouldnt 90 degree turn give more up travel and then in turn way more down travel it makes no sense to completly flip it to me!! can someone tell me why? or is it just to hard to drill new holes in the frame? or whats the deal?:icon_confused: thanks a million guys
 
not sure if you will be able to understand my jibberish, but when a leaf spring is under more load than usual (bump) it flatens out right, well this also makes the eye to eye measurement more than the static 64in. and when the truck is under less load than usual (droop) the eye to eye measurement is slightly less.

and when the shackle (on a standard 180 degree flip) is moving from droop to bump or whatever, it is moving in a arch. so when the leaf setup is at full droop, the shackle flops down, and allows that eye to eye measurement to decrease. while the opposite is true for bump. the shackle moves more vertical. which allows the leaf to have a longer eye to eye measurement.

make sense?


the usual rule of thumb on a shackle flip is to have the shackle 90 degree's from the angle of the main leaf near the leaf eye (that joins with the shackle). this helps keep the shackle angle in the "sweet spot" for best droop and bump!
 
ok i think i get it so at 180 flip it has more up room to travel and flatten out and at full droop it can extend to its normal size but would it work sideways or would it hit the plate piece and limit bump?

I've thought about this too, and what I came up with is if the shackle mount is sideways; so that when the spring is coming from droop to bump that the shackle doesn't get forced the wrong way, suddenly removing any room for the spring to expand. If you look at some aftermarket shackles, they are shaped like a J or L allowing more droop but not letting the shackle over extend the wrong way. Hopefully you can picture what I described.

I thought the spring measured 64" along the arc so would be less than 64" at static ? [question...not statement]

thanks very much i was thinkin how could i get the most travel and just wanted opinions and if it drooped out more ccould it get caught under the shackle? and the over extented i got form the start.

and the 64in measurement is prob incorrect, i was just putting a rough figure in so you could understand that the eye to eye is less than X or more than X
