This question is about my four wheel drive system. It's the Shift on the Fly. it's a pushbutton. for some reason, it takes a bunch of pushes to get it activated. sometimes, i even have to turn the truck off and then back on and push the button several more times to get the little orange light to stay solid. Can anyone help me with this. if yes thank you

is it 4 high? 4 low? both? r u shifting on the fly. or r u stopped? maybe ur speed sensor dealy bob is goin out if ur stopped.

push the low button.. see what it does.. if it flashes, put it in neutral and see if it shifts in.. if it does.. and its hard to get out of 4x4, then its probably the overhead console button itself.. that was my issue on mine.

CLean the motor first of all. even if its not the problem it wont hurt anything. Then I would pul the button assembly out and clean the connections. your shift on the fly is 4hi ONLY....! It wont do anything at all if your in gear and/or moving for 4lo. So your 4 hiis intermittent, which takes us back to the shift motor, clean it.

let me clarify, while stopped... push the 4 low button. it wont go into 4 low... the light should flash... then put it in neutral. see if it goes in then...

don't hit 4 low while moving.

Thanks for the replies guys! Yes i am talking about 4 hi, i read the manual and all the instructions on how to do it and putting it in 4 lo while moving isn't such a good idea haha. While i'm stopped, it takes a while to get it into 4 hi, when moving, it's like every other time, sometimes it will shift into 4 hi right away, or it will take a while like when its not moving. Recently, i haven't tried 4-low so i will try your suggestions, thanks. And i would clean everything out, i just haven't had the time. Once i have a free day i shall do that! haha

After reading your last lost it's not the overhead button. It's the shift motor. You may need to loosen it up and get the "fork" Back in the right position

Shift issue

While the subject is out here, I am curious if all that was described here would also make it not shift at all, I hear the solonoids clicking and all the light on button flashes but the light goes off, the solonoids stop clicking and no 4 wheel drive, Thats on a 91 explorer.

Yes that is most likely the shift motor, its 3 bolts and 20 minutes to take it out take it apart clean all the brass contacts put it together and remount it. It will make a world of difference

aaronc47, ya that's the same exact thing mines doing. and ok i'll get right to taking the shift motor off once i have the time. thanks!
