Wow, I learned something, I remember when I was little I used to always hear filler up with ester? Then there was always the joke about leaving her (Ester) alone. I always thought that the catalytic converter was the only thing that changed the carbons down to reduce smog\pollution.

No that old saying was "fill it up with Ethyl"

Refering to Tetra Ethyl Lead which was what made premium gas premium.

Though the gasoline underneath the "ethyl" was no different in terms of energy, it did make the fuel less prone to detonation.
That allowed more compression to be used.
