first off, let me say that i would NEVER have believed this if i had not seen it with my own 2 eyes!

i work at a dealership where we have to seize the engines of cars that have been traded in under the CARS program. these engines are completely drained of oil and sodium siliciate is put in to them.

today there was a 99ish mercury mountanier with the 5.0l engine.
what im about to describe is completely unbelieveable. the times im going to give i did not record with a clock or anything, but i did look at the computer form time to time when i had to come back into the parts room, so i had a good sense of time passing.

bout 2 or so there is this loud roar i hear. its a tech trying to seize the engine of this mountaineir after the oil had been drained out of it. what they do is basically just hold it at redline and wait till it siezes.

5 minutes pass. we are getting impressed

10 minutes pass. we are getting giddy - when this thing blows it'll be good! at this point the tech foot it getting tired, so he starts letting the rpm die down then gunning it and so on

15 minutes pass. at this point the tech just takes his foot off the gas. the truck still idles!!! it hardly taps, just a little tick is all you hear! he guns it and lets it idle 2 or 3 more times. by the 3 time or so, it idles, then dies. so the tech trys to restart it. crank... crank crank... crank... crank crank crank VROOM VROOM! this damn thing still starts!! by now the techs foot is tired - he lets another tech get in and have some fun.

20 minutes pass. tech #2 had been holding it at the redline since he got in

25 minutes pass. still at redline!

30 minutes pass. at this point tech #1 and another tech(#3) go out there so take a look. #1 tells #2 to let it idle down, they want to look at the exhaust. as expected, the exhaust, especially the cat, are bright red hot...not cherry red but like hot pick red lol. while idleing the engine stalls...but still cranks over!!

while i was writing this, the techs were letting the engine cool down - they were afrtaid that the truck woudl catch fire form the exhaust, and afraid that the readiator would explode. they did go out and try to start it again - it still cranks! almost got it started. i think they are gonna try again later.

if you have a vehilce like this with this 5.0 engine...dont get rid of it! they are build FORD TOUGH!!!

Aren't they supposed to fill the crankcase with sodium silicate?

just talked to tech #3 - he siad it still cranks but wont start yet. he also said they were terrified to start it right now because of fire concerns lol. my response to his was "sh*t, i'll start it, put a jack on the gas pedal, and walk away. if it catches fire we'll call the fire department thats what they're for" rofl

EDIT: its dead. they put another half a bottle of the sodium silicate in it, started it up, let it idle for about a minute, then it finally seized. the old girl was just too tired. RIP

I've heard the 300 cu.in. Ford sixes have been tough to kill as well.
