Am I wasting my time.....

err...yeah...your not wasting your time. build it.

a 2.3 was enough for me.

silly ranger, the sky is for planes.

and apparently this is not a waste of time.

haha yeah.. The 2.3 is def enough to have fun and potentially get you into trouble. That was with 4.56 gears as well.

This is a short video, and a toyota, but it shows what I mean by what I want to build my truck for.

And why I see being just as dangerous as desert racing.

I'm not saying desert racing isn't dangerous. I'm just saying I can get all sorts of messed up in the trees. And yes, the one of the truck is Jesse James lol.

In the last video, the car doesn't keep on going/rolling because of the stiff suspension. I wouldn't have a stiff suspension, and my truck would just keep rolling etc.

lol your 4 banger doesnt hace 900hp? weird... maybe you have a worn muffler berring?

Gotta love the 3.0 lol.

Tell you what though, I bet most other RBV engines would be toast if you ran them on a 3 quarts of oil everywhere you went. Man I'm glad I got that leak fixed. I've also overheated the engine three or four times.

Can't wait for a 5.0 though. Gonna be SWEET. I'll actually be able to go up slight hills!

i have 31's and still can get to 95mph. but, you can always turbo it or throw a v6 in there. ive seen a couple full on 2.3l prerunners around here.

good luck. hope to see the build.

(the funny thing is that the bigger tires threw the govuner off so it thinks im going 85 when im actually going 95, lol)

Wow I can't even get up to 80 in my Ranger with stock tire size.

wtf? y? lol. my friend has the exact same truck as you ('98 3.0l ext cab. ranger) his gov kicks in at 97 and yes he has gotten it to 97. oh and i did 95 in 4th if i go into 5th it will actually slow down to 80 :D

also my speedo is off 10mph

You will want to regear, and swap too a spring under set up. General rule of thumb for the 4cyl in these trucks is 31"=4.56's,33's=4.88's just to get back to stockish, anything less and your bogging your motor.

The 23ns is the strongest duratec of all the 2.0, 2.3, and 2.5 versions. Its the only 2.3 with out a balance shaft, a forged crank good to 7k all day, and also the only one equipped with metal timing chain guides as opposed to solid plastic. The motor is tough which is why focus guys love to get their hands on them instead of building their stock engines. The downside is that they are also the only 2.3 to come with a 2.0 head which has smaller ports to try and make a more truck like tq curve, easily solved with 2.3 head swap as neither the ranger or focus came equipped with vvt. The aftermarket for these motors is more then decent. Cams, rods, pistons, turbo manifolds, are all available. Nothing is made specifically for the trucks so if you want boost itll take some work and ive yet to see a 23ns na or turbo build on any of the ranger forums.

Is it worth it if you keep it stock?

Do people take their 80hp 22re's where no 4 cyl should supposedly go? Laughing all the way to the desert and back home with their "horrifically" underpowered bullet proof engine? Its all in how you use the motor.

My 2.3 had enough power to do the job. Electric fan, no A/C, no power steering and an intake heled it out a bit. Other than that just held it at the rev limiter.
