Air Impact Wrenches

ingersoll rand is pretty much the "standard" well built impact wrench. but for some reason, i've always preferred chicago pneumatic. they just feel better in your hand i guess, and never have i used one that was short on power by any stretch of the imagination. plus, ive never seen any failures so thats good (same goes for IR)

I don't use an impact that much--just a Campbell Hausfield cheap thing, maybe 250ft#, only on wheels. But I did have trouble with a radius arm bolt one time--a lot of trouble. Like I heated it and had a 6' cheater and bent the breaker. So I happened to see one of those tool tents and stopped in and they had this 1" drive impact, 1,500ft# for $100. I put a 1/2" air hose on my compressor (it's a Craftsman Pro 240V 6.5hp with a 60 gallon tank and rated at 9.9cfm @ 90psi--less then the wrench is speced for) and I have never been so impressed with something. I was expecting a furious display of impacting and then the hex head of the bolt to be rounded off. Nope. It gently went LUG, LUG, LUG----thump-thump-thump-thump-thump and the bolt was up and out--the American Geological Survey probably got some zone 3 readings on their monitoring equipment. I've never used it since, but I admire it so much I can't get rid of it.

I have a Craftsman that doesn't have the power it used. I've been able to loosen bolts by hand that the gun couldn't. Can an impact be rebuilt or is it time for a new one. It was good gun when I bought it.

That is exactly what my dad has, absolute ****.

Won't even remove lug nuts, ****.

(wow it actually does NOT censor those words! ha ha.) (edited!)

Yea, That's one of the things the impact wouldn't loosen so I got out the ol hand ratchet and got the lug nut off!!

Sometimes a couple of drops of Limited slip friction modifier will give it a little more umph.
