Long story short. crank pulley spun some teeth off the timing belt, replaced it and no spark. got the shop to check the crank sensor and they say i need a harmonic balancer (crank hub), and a crank sensor for starters. and just out of curiosity i had them do a compression check and guess what. 30 freakin psi in #2 cylinder. ok so im thinking a bent valve maybe? im already looking at about 4-500 bucks in parts. can anybody think of what else i may need? my neigbor says the piston rod could be cracked too. how likely is that? Ive had a hellofa time with life lately with everything around me and i just dont know what to do with this truck. any suggestions other than a stick of tnt?:bawling:

You can check the valves somewhat by simply pulling the valve cover off and try to rotate the engine by hand...make sure you disconnect the battery first...if you don't see anything stuck or otherwise out of place, then you may have a problem with either a head gasket or possibly cracked pistons...

But I guess it might also hang on what happened to make the belt getting stripped...could be a seized engine...if cranking by hand is not an option then that may be where the problem lies...but take it one step at a time and don't get too discouraged...these engines are easy enough to replace...if worst comes to worst then you might have to swap it out for a good used one...or have yours rebuilt...if you have the time, money, and patience...

TNT is not the answer...aside from being dangerous to the seats in your truck, you may get arrested for unnecessary noise or some other ordinance in your town...:)

The 2.3 are non interferance engines meaning the valves will never be able to hit the pistons even when you do break a timing belt.

well the engine turns i had to turn it to get it back to TDC when installing the new timing belt.

sounds like a head gasket or rings for compression. i have never seen a crank hub as you call it go bad withjout being in an accident or something like that. the sensor is the more likely cause, kinda sound like the shop is trying to get your money and blaming the expensive parts first.

i Found a piece of magnet down by the crank sensor . I have since removed TBI and Upper Intake along with the valve cover and looking for a clue before tearing the head off. any ideas? :icon_welder:

A lot of times when the belt breaks it will break the crank sensor and in doing so it will bend the vanes on the crank hub.If you found a piece of magnet, this probably what happened.Did it run good before you broke the belt? How did you break the belt?Did you do a leak down test on cyl.2?

no i havent done a leak test. how do u do that? i almost wonder if the compression is really bad at all or why all of a sudden it would be bad when all that happened was the crank spun the teeth off the bottom of the belt. no breakage. i was driving down the road and all of a sudden someone just threw a switch and it was dead. if it is indeed a no-interference motor then why would i have a compression issue at all if it was running fine previously. unless the mechanic just wanted to make some money.?:icon_cheers::icon_cheers::headbang:

I had the same thing happen just last week on my truck. I was driving down the road, and then...nothing. And just like yours, it pulled teeth off the belt instead of breaking it. As someone stated, these are non-interference engines, so i'm also confused as to why you now have problems. I simply put on a new belt and it was fine. It runs just the same as it did before the belt failed.
