Are these transmissions the same (2WD/4.0L). The reason I ask is that there are tonnes of Aerostar transmissions for cheap at the wrecking yard I like to go to.

The only POTENTIAL difference with an AWD aerostar transmission Vs a 4x4 trans for a Ranger/Explorer is that the shifter bellcrank on the side of the trans MAY be different
Actually WILL be different depending on what specific year Aerostar you are talking about .
'90-91 used an on the floor shifter, '93-96.5 used a column shifter
'96.5-97 used the 5R55E trans.
