so me and my buddy got offered a 3rd gen with a toasted head gasket. the inside is clean, its got clear coat peeling. its got 170K on the 4.0 its a 5speed,manual everything. we told the guy we would give him a grand for it. good deal?

Not too bad, maybe a bit on the high side though. It really depends on the market in your area. Considering the condition of the rest of the truck and whether it's a gasket or a cracked head, I may go for it.

this is the 2nd motor for the truck. the guy stopped driveing as soon as the gasket started going

i just replaced a headgasket in my 95 4.0 cost me 150 for all the gaskets... like its been said thats a bit high for a vehicle in need of repair. id definitely talk him down.

I would plan on replacing the engine with a junkyard engine before you
even start to disassemble the "dead one"....

it's typical that you can find a running engine in a junkyard
in a vehicle with a DEAD automatic trans for about the same
price as the gasket set for a 4.0.

And to swap a motor may seem like a big job but there are
fewer bolts involved than there are in pulling the heads.

Besides if the oil is already "Latte" the engine is going to have oil pressure problems when you reassemble it.

If only because the coolant washes all the crap off the inside of the
engine and gums up the pickup screen...
