ABS engaging while braking

Adsm, does the light have to be on constantly to pull codes for the ABS system?

No, the light doesn't have to be on.

It will hold a memory code for quite some time as well.

Also, it won't run the self test until you get up over 20 or 25 MPH, so if there is a bad tone ring or something but all the circuits are intact the light will be off when the key is turned on even though the problem is not there.

Thank you guys, Especially Adsm, I learned some new things! I am thinking it is the tone ring. People are telling me its because of the 35's on the truck but I guess once the hub is replaced we will see for sure then!

I hope I got it fixed. I ordered Timken hubs with ABS lines from Rockauto.com. These are for 07 Rangers but fit is the same and the ABS plugs fit and function normal. The 07 Tinken hubs are 1/2 the price of the 01 hubs but the same exact thing. I installed them, replaced both sides of course and took it out for a drive about 15-20 miles and all seems well. Hopefully this will be the end of the ABS issues! Here is a pic!

Similar Problem!

Did I get you correct that an '07 hub is a replacement/fit for an '01?

Got a similar problem. Started as an intermittent grind on the left front. Thought is was a brake issue. Sounded like I had a piece of gravel in between the rotor and pad. Replaced the pads and rotors last summer. Went away for about three weeks. Then came back. I did notice the abs engaging once in a while at the end of a stop at the bottom of my driveway. Just thought it was gravel at the bottom of the driveway.

Now a slight turn to the left and at the end of the stop, ABS engages. No abs light as yet. Yesterday did so on a straight stop and pulled to the right. Dealer, a good friend, said they replace a lot of sensors. Now I am wondering based on this thread that maybe the hearing is going. Heck I can get a complete hub and sensor (Timkin) for $186. The sensor alonne is $135. But the work to replace the hub is, not fun.

Any thoughts or help?

Yes the 07 hub fits an 01. A buddy of mine did it and recommended it to me. I had the same exact problem as you, the gravely sound and ABS kicking in. Check Rockauto.com for the 07 hubs with sensors, I believe they are cheaper than your price you have listed here.

Rockauto

Just ordered the hub!!! Real good price. :D

Fixed!

Just installed the new hub. Issue gone.

The bearing seems find. I suspect the tone ring inside is the issue. Could be cracked. I will remove the sensor and inspect the ring for any damage when rotating the hub.

Same here, so far so good!! Everything is back to normal and got a nice deal on Timken hubs!
