I'm sure some of you have a Ranger, Bronco II or Explorer that you no longer drive, but hang on to, broke and just haven't gotten around to fixing it in quite some time, or something that you had to buy thinking you'd build it some day and haven't got to.

Post up. Let's see what you have.

Bowing my head in shame a bit...

I at least built it a place to live last summer.

91 low buck race truck... No motor. I don't have a place to race anymore and no money if I did.
91 white work truck. Magic smoke escaped the dash harness. This truck has the motor from the race truck.
93 parts truck. 2.3 5-speed. 5-speed will probably end up in the blue pinto one day. Efi will too.
86 ranger 2.9. Trans and rear will get swapped onto the 2.8 in my orange pinto.

So, what's the wheelbase on a Pinto. Ever thought about a Pinto body on Ranger chassis/drivetrain? One of those station wagon Pintos with the round bubble window near the back end.

I'd have to look that up. Or grab a tape measure. Pintos are uni-body so there would probably be some floor cutting involved.
There is a pinto station wagon for sale next province over. I've thought about it but too many projects already....

Ahh fudge…

*sigh*

This may take a bit to fill in…
but hey, the green Ranger clawed its way to the top of the heap and turned out to be pretty cool to boot.

I would agree except right now there’s a big crack in the frame of the green Ranger which is going to require removal of the entire front axle assembly which is delaying other projects again. I don’t know why this thing has decided to fight me tooth and nail to be completed…

So I’m collecting parts and things plus working on getting a workspace set up to make things easier on myself hopefully and increase productivity. I’m also intending on ripping the heads off the dump truck in the near future to get to the machine shop. There’s a lot of work to be done on the dump truck and I can’t really spend a lot of effort on it until the green Ranger is back up, but the sooner I get the heads to the machine shop, the sooner I’ll have them back.

I also need to spend some time on the Choptop, the Ferguson, and the boat this year, plus all the side quests I get into.

I’m not sure what will be the next project after that. I’ll be lucky if I can get all of that done this year. Probably knock out the 88, that thing has been sitting a long time and I’ve had nearly every part to put it back together on hand for a long time. I’m also currently planning a rebuild of the F-150. There’s also my blue Ranger that I started with and my red 92 Ranger that are both wrecked with frame damage. I have vague plans for both. Plus the 98 Explorer I bought for parts with a bad fuel pump and the dang thing is super clean so I might resurrect it. I also have a few other plans in the works…

There’s probably going to be more delays once the dump truck is fixed because that will allow me to make some real strides in whipping my property into shape.

(Sorta) Abandoned 1: My 1984 Ranger regular cab, short bed, 2.8L manual. I was my first vehicle and has been abandoned since 2009, but for a good reason.

The reason it's sorta abandoned is because it wasn't exactly by choice. The reason I call it abandoned instead of scrap is because I had plans to salvage the few good parts (fresh engine and good suspension parts) to install on a future Ranger project. It's been 16 years and that hasn't happened, so I think that counts as abandoned. That said I still want to use the parts in something eventually.

Abandoned 2: Next up is an 86 Ranger regular cab short bed. Purchased in 2010 (IIRC) with a "bad" 2.9L and was initially intended to be the recepient of parts from the 84. Sometime around 2011 I'd gotten my hands on a rolled V8 Explorer and plans had changed. Attempted to do too much. was going to swap entire chassis harness from the Explorer, but keeping the Ranger dash and controls. I bit off more than I could chew, got discouraged, and it never progressed. Picked it back up a few times, had it stripped to the mare frame, and even had the engine sitting on the frame at one point. Never got past that point. Currently a bare frame and parts scattered around the yard. Officially abandoned and unlikely to be revived as of 2022.

Future project: 1985 Ranger regular cab, long bed, 2.3L Auto. Bought it as a fresh start in 2022, back to the intent to use the parts from the 84 Ranger. These photos were saved from the listing as I haven't taken any good ones myself.

Intent was to drop in my 2.8L and use it until other projects are done. I've since decided to change routes with the build. Going to try to revive the 2.3L that is in it and I think that I want to end up with a 2.3T instead of the 2.8L. It might get the 2.8L "temporarily" if I can't revive the 4 cylinder though. It was originally a bucket seat and console truck, and I intend to restore it to that. I've got all suspension pieces I need to lower and make it handle nice, to include a 13" Cobra brake swap and Explorer disc axle.

Plans got put on hold when I discovered that the driver side floor pan is much further rusted out than I thought. I think was mostly carpet and wishes holding the seat in on that side. Project paused until I get things situated to where I can tackle a floor pan.

'99 is soon to hit a temporary holding point where I need to wait for parts or change direction with the build, but it'll sit at that holding point for a while. Some heavy maintenance is almost done on the F-250. After that I'll be seeing about some rust repairs on the F-100, I've got the parts, just need to get them preped and installed. Then I think I'll be able to settle into tackling the 85.

Bowing my head in shame . .
I think i just chickened out after I got the donor

This sounds relatable...

In order of priority here are some of my ongoing projects:

#1, my wife's basket case, that was her grandpa's truck. It was a mess when we got it but I have regeared it, cleaned the interior, new windshield, different wheels, and some other repairs. Then the transmission started acting up. I had it rebuilt and should have that put back together this evening. I need to do valve cover gaskets and a couple other things on it while it's in the shop. It's been parked for almost 2 years so I'm excited to have it up & running.

#2 - my 94 Explorer sport SAS project, I am putting full width 9" and '76 Dana 44 axles in it. I think this has been parked since about 2021 or 2022. I wheeled it a little bit sometime around then and decided to SAS it. It's been in my shop since about this time last year and I'm slowly picking away at it. Waiting on parts right now.

#3, my old beater '88 Ranger, currently it's parked at our other property and my dad is using it to haul garbage or put garbage in or something. Don't know, don't really care. I quit driving it last spring when I bought my '94. It's not really a project per se as I could probably get in it at drive it where ever if I needed to or wanted to... I keep hoping to find another truck with a decent body that I can swap my drivetrain into, I have a lot of money into that but the body on this truck is just about shot. It looks way better in pictures than it actually is.

#4, is not an RBV but is at least a Ford. My poor old F150. I got this from my grandpa in 2004. It's been sitting in its usual spot in my shop for about 2 years, I need to pull it out and drive it for a couple weeks to run some fresh fuel through it but one of the rear axle seals is leaking somewhat and the oil pan is leaking a lot. I have box sides and a lot of parts saved up for it, somehow just can't find the motivation. It has a fuel injected 302 and 4 speed manual right now, the plan has always been to paint it the same baby blue color and end up with a 408 stroker engine and ZF 5 speed trans. Someday... sigh... pic from about 12 years ago, looks the same now, just covered in dust
