A4ld ?

That was a great read and has me thinkin, I dont have some of the things that I need to build a franken-tranny, but I have friends who do. It might be a way to go. Hows the tranny holdin up and how many miles you got on it now?

I've had mine installed since last summer. Had zero issues with it. I have hauled my tent trailer with it. The truck as a whole doesn't like it but the trans is up to the task. I also beat the crap out of the truck at any opportunity I can get.

I plan on swapping in a 302 this year so that'll be the end of Franken-tranny.

Not able to take a stock 302?

I've been inside all the common auto transmissions. The parts inside the Rangers overdrives are pathetically light. They are all based on the A4ld, they made upgrades through the years that make them better but, they are all weak.
If you drive your RBV down the highway and don't ever abuse the tranny it will hold up better than many of the competitors trannies.
There are at least 6 different MAIN components inside these trannies that are way to light to handle any abuse. Although, The 4.0 liter trannies have a few components that are heavier than the 2.9 trannies. It may be possible to use a 4.0 liter trans on the back of a 2.9 and keep it together fairly well.
One thing you should NEVER do is: back up quickly, drop it in drive and stomp the throttle. Guaranteed carnage!

The slap stick thing with the trans is almost a no brainer for most transmission... it's also high on my "things I don't wanna do list" for my Ranger. Too bad other people don't get it.
My personal experience with the A4LD... it's enough transmission in stock form to move the vehicle it came in rather well in the environment it was designed to be used in... So long as there is no abuse and you regulate how much you tow.
There is a company that sells "upgrade" A4LD and it's sister transmission parts. I have yet to hear any feed back about them, but seems to me that if someone did a few of the ideas to the A4LD etc... they might hold up a little longer. (see link below)

Let me know what you gents and ladies think... I'm curious.

What do you think the "LD" of A4LD stands for ???? LIGHT DUTY !!!!
Early A4LD's have aluminum 3 pin planetaries and brass thrust washers. Very old and weak design. 5R55E/ Frankentranny has steel 6 pin planetaries --which must be at least twice as strong- and needle bearing thrust washers.
Still concider it light duty compared to a C-4,C-6 or whatever but the fact is that it's stronger and more durable than the orginal A4LD.

Looks like a version of a Franken-tranny. Likely much more durable than what came stock behind a 2.9. If you had to replace a A4LD, might as well get the strongest you get. Seems a decent price as well.

I have two A4LD trannies out of 1992 Eplorers hooked to 2.9 V6s in w of my BIIs. Had them flushed out completely & have over 60,000 miles on each of them. No problems at all so far. BUT I don't beat the hell of them on a daily basis either. They shift fine all the time. I have no complaints with them so far. Keep them flushed out every 30,000 miles, drive them sensibly & I think they will hold up just fine. I have a total of 6 Fords with the A4LD trannies & all of them work fine.

I have the 1350 T-case and the 1354 is stronger, my ? is can you make a 1354 into a manual shift?

they are really rare but they made a 1354 manual but good luck finding one. as far as converting the easy cheap way is to take the shift motor off and use a pair of pliers to change between 2 and 4 wheel i just put a 1350 in my truck and its taken a beating and hasnt gave in yet keep your 1350

So I almost have my A4LD back together. I measured my end plays tonight and ordered a few more small parts needed to finish it off. This has been my first tranny rebuild but has gone pretty well so far. Can't wait to put it in the truck. I took a few pictures after work today

Ready to be put back together!

The major carnage from when i took it apart - the end of the pump should not be concave like that.
