a4ld trouble

My a4ld wont shift into any forward gears without reving engine to about 4 grand then letting straight off. when it does engage tranny shifts through the gears great. No hard shifts and it goes into all the other gears. truck has 357,000 (no rebuild!) original miles and doesnt make a bad sound. Id really like to find an answer to this problem to see how far the purple power ranger can go before its demise!
