A4LD trany Question

Hi all need some help, got the A4LD and its not shifting into 4th gear. Don't know exactly what to do just got the truck. If anyone one could tell me where to start that would be great.

Generally that would mean you need to change the 3-4 shift solenoid. It could for be other reasons but that's the most common with that trans. Messy job. You have to drain it and pull the valve body to change the solenoid.

Not the right tranny

i found out that the truck does not have the A4LD it has the 4R44E. would it be the same problem?

On your 1987 with a 2.9?

There is very little chance of that transmission being a 4R44E. Here's a good link to ID what you've got:

According to that, you either have a C3 or an A4LD. If you have a C3 there is no 4th gear. Did they put the C3 in vehicles with the 2.9? That I don't know so I'll defer to Earl on that. If you have an A4LD your solution is in post 2 and/or 3. Do you have one or two 'D' positions on you shift indicator?

i looked at the different tranny pics and my tranny has the bubble like the
4r44e. not really sure on that but i know its a four speed cuz it acts like it wants to shift after third and the rpms keep goin up. after i hit 50 mph its at 3000 rpms and clims if i go any faster. when the truck is in park it idles at like 1100. could that be a problem too?

The A4LD uses the same pan with the "bubble" on it. The first year for the 4r44e was 1995. You have an A4LD.
