I just put a new 4.0 in my 90 ranger and took it for a test drive today. Runs great, no check engine light or anything, all fluids full, but it will not shift into overdrive. Get home, wash the truck, go to start it and nothing, not even a click. With the key on, it can be started by jumping the starter relay by the battery. Also, when I turn the key on, the check engine light comes on and stays on, but does not flash. I am thinking it is the neutral safety switch, and will look into that tomorrow. What is the procedure for pulling a code from this truck?

You may have knocked the wires off the transmission,1 plug on trans is for neutral switch and other plug on trans for 4th gear and lockup, plugs are on drivers side of tranny . The neutral switch plug is round and the 4th gear lockup plug is oval and has three wires to it.

Hopes this helps.

That helps a lot actually, thanks for the info Bruce. I read up on the code pulling techniques and I'll have to check if the CEL stays on when the truck is running.

New neutral safety switch at NAPA is 82.99, guess I'm going to the junkyard for a new one.
