what would cause an input shaft to not be able to be puled out when the torque converter is out of the trans?

i unsuccessfully tried to instal my 4.0 today and couldnt because the input shaft wont seat correctly. after some fustrations and research, i realised this, and further tried to fix this by swapping the ends without knowing which end was the correct end to have at the TC.

now i have the wrong end inside the trans, and CANNOT for the life of me get the dang thing back out.

so first, why wont it seat all the way in, and second, how do you get a stuck shaft out, and third, what the hell is keeping it in there?

4th...am i in for pulling the trans to get this fixed? motor and exhaust are already out.

The input shaft splines into the OD planets which may be twisted slightly. Take a pair of vise grips and align the teeth of vise grips with splines on shaft and clamp it tightly then take a hammer and tap on the vise grips and hopefully shaft will come out.If and when the shaft comes out check it to make sure splines arent twisted on shaft.

Good Luck , Bruce

thats about what i was doing. so you are about the 6th or 7th person thats said about the same exact thing. it has got to either be a wrecked trans, which ran when i parked it, or its me.

im gonna say i was just too pissed at the end of the day, and go at it with a fresh clear mind this week....

so, about that OD planet assembly...what is the likely hood of damage to that unit from working in the input shaft? i am at a point where i cannot think of anything else to do but to drill and tap the shaft to put a slide hammer on it. something tells me that based on numerious peoples opinion that "it should just slide out", there has to be something damaged. what can go wrong with where the shaft slides into the plannet gears? assuming that there is nothing wrong with the shaft itself like twisted splines or a bent shaft.

The splines in OD planets is what that shaft goes into. The best thing at this point is to pull the bell housing and pump out back the band adjustment off so you can get OD band out and remove coast clutch drum and OD planets then you can knock the shaft out from the opposite side of planets and see if the splines in the planets are bad or the shaft.

when i had posted i already had started a hole on the shaft, so i continued with drilling, tapping, and putting a slide hammer on. the slide hammer only took two or three mild raps to get the shaft out. i did go through the splines again with a triangle file and took some peened over looking spots on the face of the shaft...greased it, and slowly, gently worked it back in to where it stopped short, then took a wooden peg and tapped at different angles on the shaft- thinking of, if things shifted i could maybe get an angle hit to realign. i could feel splines engaging but only to a point, then suddenly "i just slid right in"..........thanks for the replies bruce!
