I was driving my 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9L 4x2 Automatic and while in first gear turning into my complex gassing it to proceed home, something popped and now my truck won’t engage any gears at all. Nothing was ever wrong with it but the lag between 3rd and OD but other than that it shifted fine and everything. Trying to see if it’s just a part I can order and fix or I need another transmission? I know it has to be something simple because it was driving and just popped out of gear and won’t engage any but the floor shifter still shifts into gears just doesn’t engage. Please help!!!!!

I moved the thread to the transmissions section for better visibility and searchablity.

I don't know enough about automatic transmissions to provide anything of use. Someone will be along that will be able to help. Welcome to the forum and good luck!

So if the shifter linkage hasn’t come apart (drivers side of the transmission is where it connects), then it could be something in the transmission. Could be about anything, torque converter, band, seal, something. If it’s anything internal to the transmission, unless it’s low on fluid, the transmission would likely have to come out to fix (about the only exception being if you blew the valve body gasket, which only means dropping the pan).

I am looking for A4LD transmission for my Rager Xlt 4.0 automatic. I bought an used but unfortunately all fluid leaks on my way home. Now I have 2 bad transmission. There's some trust company selling a good transmission rebuild? Can I use others transmission without modifications for my Ranger ?

I dont know much about automatic transmissions. Look for obivious issues. Anything loose on the transmission. Behind the motor there is a vacuum line that connects to a piope. Maybe it came off and caused you an issue. About all I can do to suggest a fix.

@Reginaldo
Welcome to TRS.
Can you share where you are located ...just curious
The A4LD has a bad reputation although the one in my 94 4.0 is running strong.
Any A4LD will work and they should'nt be hard to find depending on where you are located. If there is a local junk yard you might have some luck finding one there. An AR55LD may fit but someone else will have to confirm that.

A4LD often gets a bad rap because people don’t take care of them, change fluid and filter, adjust the bands… a shift kit and some valve body work will increase performance and reduce slippage which builds heat which kills the trans.

The 4R44/4R55/5R44/5R55 trans are all electrically controlled shift points, so to put those in place of an A4LD you would need an aftermarket shift controller
