So I'm getting pretty sick of the retail store work force and want to get into a more hands-on environment.

How hard is it to get certified? Is it worth it to get certified?(enough good jobs out there) How would i go about exactly getting certified?

I already do all the work on my truck and have a restore project in the works for the wife's BII. So i have the mechanic ability i believe to do it. Just need some feed back from anyone in the field who has gotten certified.

i know you need 3 years experience to be certified. not sure what work qualifies... UTI when i usta wanna go but decided against it, said they count as 1 year towards it. google... theres gotta be so much on this online...

thats like me saying should i get certifications in Network+ and Security+... ya it is a piece of paper that says hey you know this. Doesnt mean your the best guy to go to though...

It is actually 2 years hands on experience, and If you go to an automotive school that counts as one year. You have to take tests for each area of certification, and they are not easy Tests to take. The tests are offered in may and November and run 30ish a piece if I remember right.

yes it is 2 years experience and school counts as 1 year, its not that difficult to get certified if you can pass the test. The key is to study your butt off for the test, dont go in thinking you know enough to pass, they're gonna ask you stuff about the science of some stuff, word the questions weirdly, or ask you about a procedure that may be done differently than you would usually do things. the tests are $30 each with a $36 registration fee, i believe. I just took mine thursday and the 4 week wait for results is going to kill me.

A little clarification of some things, 2 years hands on experience from an established business/shop, For every 2 years of school, you will get 1 year credit, so a total of 4 years of schooling is needed to qualify. Depending on the location, ASE tests are offered 4 times per year, 2 are CBT (Computer Based Testing) and 2 are written testing. As far as being worth it, if you are in a room with another person twice your age, and the Employer asks for qualifications, the older guy says he has 30 years experience, but no certs, and you say nothing but hand over the ASE certs, odds are you will get the job, there is a high chance that an employer will take ASE certs over a non certified experienced tech, because employers in the field know what it takes to acquire an ASE cert, and the tech that are ASE certified know there work :icon_thumby:

the ASE cert in my opinion is a joke....not saying it as soemone that has never been certified either, i had my ase's but when my age came into question the job was always differed to the older mechanic....maybe thats not the case in what uve experienced, but i was never able to pay for my ase's because noone wants to pay them the money the certifications warrant

im taking school right and you can just take the test. but the classes give you that experience you need to pass. So if you studied your ass off you could take the test and not take any classes.

Ive got my ASE cert for Parts Specialist but if my employer didnt reimburse me for the cost of test and also give me a $.25 per hour raise i probably wouldnt have spent the $50 for registering and used the gas it took to get that blue piece of paper.
