A couple rear axle questions


I've got 4.56s in the rear and 4.10s up front, I've used 4wd around the property in the slick mud to pull around the parts rigs with no axles, haven't broke anything so far, feels kinda funny though :icon_twisted:

Low traction MAYBE, but wheeling, NO WAY. first time you turn the wheel and hit the gas it will spit parts.

Trust me, I know. I have no plans of wheeling it like this. The 4.56 pig is sitting the back room of the shop, just need to get my ass outside to swap it.
 
if yo have lower gears in the back it'll push constantly on the front and instead of riding on the back side of the ring gear you'll be riding on the front (or am I saying that backwards) which will destroy your sh!t and tear everything up... and you don't have 4 wheel drive in this case... you just have lots of drag on the front.
 
look in mud drags they all ran miss match gears and i wheeled that piss out off my trun the side to side did not broke shit :thefinger::thefinger::thefinger:
 
ok, so you're saying that you can drive an axle on the back side of the ring gear when you're driving forward?

there is something called backlash in your gears, both sides of the pinion gear faces don't touch the ring gear at the same time... so if the truck is pushing from the rear then the front is on the back side... meaning it's not working... or is dragging as if you let off the pedal.

the only time it works is when you have no traction in the rear wheels... this is pretty basic in the way I'm explaining it... but it's stupid to do, and I really don't care if you or 20,000 others have done it... it doesn't make it right, or work.

huh? depends on what your doing. many competitors been doing it for decades, so they win. the object was winning. so if your winning that makes it right. two identical jeeps with 300 hp, one with mis matched gear tire combo other straight up.. on a L or c course with ponds....mis match wins by 3 seconds.

for street/hard surface use.....bad idea, off road low traction conditions and in competitions it can actually be preferred, whats not right about that?
 
u meen some one on here knows some things holy shit. one more thing ford runs miss match gears for the factory look at your always alittle off thank u bobby
 
what? so you're saying because the one jeep got a better hook-up or had a faster reaction time that the gear mis-match is right... there are too many variables for you to make that assumption.

and RRSTX, you're saying ford has mis-matched gears from the factory?? I'd like you to post your facts... and wikipedia won't count.

Yeah but those numbers are close, it would be like having one tire aired down more then the other or having worn out tires in the front and brand new ones in the rear. I could see in mud drags wanting one set of tires spinning faster than the others. ie. full throttle tire spining, turning the front tires faster with a higher ratio than the rear, to pull the front end around.

maybe, if the front is a taller gear... but I'm talking about the front being a shorter gear...

even having a taller gear makes an issue with the rear axle.... you simply make it drag if either axle hooks up.
 
reality and theory dont always match up.


theres some competition situatons where the mismatch is beneficial. the drivetrain is being tortured of course and no one is saying otherwise, and there are better ways to do things depending on actual ground conditions and track type.

i usually run a lil taller tire in front for wheelin. enough to bind and hop the truck hard/violently on dry pavement. in deep mud it would hamper me in a race situation but climbing up steep stuff it actually helps.

so now all of a sudden you change your story to front not being taller. read your posts, you were talking about the front "working" and the rear backlash would be run side of the ring gear, now you see tech adviser and wha bam you all of sudden know what your talking about, the only thing you know is how to give bad info to all the other idiots on here. ppl ask for help not info about what you believe, if they wanted that they would go to a chruch. few posts = many wrenching hours. Honestly how many ppl on here are mechanics and know how to do there own work?!
