a/c worked untill it took a full can...

I also have done the swap on my 88 B2 which is the exact same as 4x4junkie, and your vehicle.

One thing I noticed not mentioned is that with your system, if it runs dangerously low on refridgerant, it will not even engage the compresser (safety switch). also, brutus, many auto parts stores sale different size cans, not just 1lb.

It sounds to me like either A - your switch is bad, and needs changed. Which unfortunatly will ruin all of your fluid in the system. Or B - he mixed R12 w/ 134a.

Also while your AC is running take a look at the little eyeglass and see if you see consistant fluid flow, or bubbles. If it looks consistant, unplug the plug, and jump it. See if your A/C goes cold.

No sight glass on accumulator-type A/C systems.

Normally the way to check these systems is to feel if the evaporator core outlet tube (upper tube) is within 5-10° of the lower (inlet) tube. If it's much warmer than that, this is an indicator of it being low on freon. However I'm not sure how a system with mixed freon types would behave in this respect.

not r-12. i think the guy that did the work should just fix the problem since it was working before he took it in.

sight glasses are only on receiver dryer systems, not accumulator systems. they can be on r-12 or r-134a systems

there are a few freak exceptions

oh I agree, but maybe it still is ok. Even before the pump shouldnt of clicked on and off that often (at least my 88 never did, with R12 or the 134a). I think he should try to jump the switch and see if it goes cold.

if it was blowing cold, then yes it was working. maybe not as best as it could but it was working.

turning on and off is ok, but it shouldn't be doing it rapidly.

on expansion valve systems it will cycle less frequently. im pretty sure your 88 should have an orifice tube and when properly charged it should cycle regularly

afaik mine has an expansion valve. Nothing stock left on my A/C system.

I'm keeping my stock refrigerant! Works good, just need some oil in the compressor. I got a guy who can charge it down and put some oil in the compressor and charge it again.

Overcharging the system can damage the compressor if it gets liquid refrigerant into it the refrigerant goes thru the expansion device into the evaporator in the cab as a low pressure vapor and the vapor absorbs the heat in the cab and goes thru the compressor to the condenser as a high pressure vapor and pulls the heat out it and condenses to a liquid when the system is over charged the condenser is full of liquid and the heat cannot be pulled out of is as efficient as in a vapor. The oil mixes with the refrigerant to lube the compressor so after some time of refilling the system with refrigerant it can get low on oil but probably not in your case as it was working before you fixed it. You dont just add a can of juice when it is low you need to add the proper amount and I have my doubts wether the guy even knows what he is doing but taking your money. If he added the wrong refrigerant the system needs to be reclaimed but find the leak first then take it to a reputable shop to evacuate the system and add oil and refrigerant. Their is no exhaust port on a cooling system so fix the leak the have it charged properly it could also be a pressure switch going bad causing it to cycle erratic but you need to put some guages on it to determine that and when it has the proper charge using pressures and temperatures.
