that is what I was looking for...... a way to bypass the automatic system...........

I didn't drop it off at ford or pick it up, but I did drive it home the rear axle almost exploded, pulled the drive shaft and used the 4wd to get it home,......... It was shifted (switched) 2wd when it was parked. that ford dealership wont answer those questions though............. however I know I will not ever even let them change a battery for me ever ..............

Yeah, this all happened before you got it.

My brother had a fit with that part of the story, something about the trouble he would have been in if a truck came back with that problem after he worked on it.

He did say it seems some big dealerships don't want to hassle with vehicles that old anymore, and maybe they saw the blown axle and just didn't want to deal with anything else that popped up.

For example last week they had a 2002 Contour hauled in from Omaha (over an hour away) It wouldn't start and every dealership they took it to up there gave a different reason why with an obsene figure to fix it. Two hours and a timing belt later it drove out the door.
