97 460 issues....

Fo' sho' ....... th3 96 and 97 460's are MAF and obd2
Even Satan's Motorhome (my mom's former 96 E350) was obd2 and MAF.

Anything with cali emissions had MAF in 96. Fed emissions had EEC IV and map thru 97....or so i read.

Mines definatly not MAF and def a 97.

That could be because she bought it in California

Im guessing its cause its over 8800 gvw.

After the issues ive had with the couple 460s ive had ill never have another i know that. Any future pre 97 trucks i own will be 300 powered lol

Dude, I know you don't like diesel..... but the first gen powerstrokes were voted most reliable engine ever sold in a pick up. They have 2 known issues, cam sensor and the water neck rusts out..... both easily fixed. Just find one that's been well maintained.... and then there is the 300.... I know it can be found in f250s.... but very rare after '87....... like I have only seen 1 in my entire life..... but there is literally nothing to stop you from putting a 300 into any pre-97 truck.

Good luck with it

I just dont tow enough to warrent a PSD, not to mention the fact i paid 9k for my 97 with 62000 miles on it in damn near mint shape, a PSD woulda been 14k...

Im not sure how a 300 would drag my 30ft 7000lb travel trailer. No doubt in my mind it would do it, and never whimper, but it is nice to be able to pull out without 2 miles of no traffic.

Thats my other powerstroke complaint, they just aint got the punch like a 460, stock for stock anyways.

Im not knocking the 7.3s reliabilty though, its head and shoulders above the turd that replaced it.

Not a 460 towing engine on the road that will keep up with a 'stroke.... my nearly stock 7.3l 'stroke drug every 460 it came across down the track and it would pin you to the seat.... that being said I was running a quicker spooling turbo from a 2000 7.3l.

I'm not knocking the 460, my '96 F350 cc dually diesel got 15mpg normal driving with 4.10 gears and my '91 F350 cc dually with a speed density 460 got 12 with the same transmission and gears with an engine that was much simpler and cheaper to work on and get parts for.

I like them both.

But your question about the 300.... use MAF and OBD2 so you can run better heads/cam and boost on your 300 and it will pull like a 460

What if I could find you a rust free near mint super cab or crew cab OBS 'stroke in an F250HD/F350 4wd for under 10K.... would you fly out here and give it a try?

Not now....i got to much invested in this damn 460. :icon_welder:

You sure? I could have 6 lined up tomorrow..

Yeah, im sure lol, but thanks anyways. My 460 is more less rebuilt now.

I had the top end redone at 72k cause it ate a headgasket, drove it another 10k miles and had a main go to knocking. I contemplated a newer V10 truck but i didnt want a payment. .
The thing wasnt meant to be my DD, that award goes to my 77, which has been an amazing truck. But its getting to the point it needs attention to. Just minor stuff, but trying to find time to do it....

Everyone rips on the 400, but everyone ive had has treated me muvh better then my 460s, atleast untill i stomp the skinny pedal.

I dont have one no, but i may pick one up so i can see.

After doing some reading i guess it could be the fuel pump, but it does it on both tanks, so maybe filter? I dont know, ill pick up a tester this weekend and see what i come up with.
Let me do you a favor before you buy one....

Don't get the harbor freight one...

None of the fittings have the same thread connection and it leaks a sprays fuel like a b*stard.

No idea how I missed this post. Lol.

I've driven a few 7.3s. The OBS ones just never felt as stout as the 460 to me. Plus they carry identical tow
ratings and close power specs. A 97 460 carries 245hp and 410ftlbs@2200rpm. Same gen stroker gets 215hp and 415ftlbs@2000. My 460 averages high 12s empty and around 8 or 9 with the camper.

Swap the turbo to the 2000 .85:1 turbo and use a CX racing intercooler and it will drag that 32’ camper into oncoming traffic to pass that Prius like a sports car.... but vortech says they can do the same with a 460
