I have a 96 Ranger supercab 2wd with the 3.0 V6 and 4 speed automatic which i believe is the 4R44E. I've owned the truck since new and this is the original tranny. At 175K miles the tranny is ready for a rebuild, but the truck isn't worth spending $1500 on a rebuilt and I'd just preferr to swap from the junkyard. What is the newest year transmission I can put into this truck? Will the 4R55E drop in?

Any 95+ 4R44E transmission behind a 3.0 2WD truck will bolt up. The electronics haven't changed IIRC.

The 4R55E/5R55E will not bolt up due to the fact that they only came behind the 4.0 V6, which has a different bellhousing pattern that does not mate to the 3.0 V6.

Your automatic is a dime a dozen at yards, but it can be risky to get one, even if its new. You unfortunately have no way of knowing how it was driven or cared for. Make sure you get something like a 30 day warranty with the transmission just in case.

i have the same truck and i have replaced the tranny 5 times. (it failed under warrenty) the 4r44e is a P.O.S. dont put another one in if you can help it. swap out for a C4 or a 5spd

The C4 does not have overdrive, which may be important for him.

To be honest, the best way to solve this is to get it rebuilt. That will be the only way to know for sure that it will work and be covered by a warranty.
