I'm planning to do the timing cover gasket replacement on my 1996 and I'm wondering about the harmonic balancer. How long do harmonic balancers usually last? The rubber in those must get stiff after 30 years making the part about useless. Should I replace the harmonic balancer while I have an easy opportunity?

IDK about the 3.0, but the 4.0 was so cheap (like $20) I changed it while I was there. I'm a well known cheap bastard. LOL

The 3.0 is internally balanced and the pulley is driven directly off the hub that goes on the crank, not through the rubber.

As long as the external ring isn't spinning freely falling off the quality of the rubber doesn't really matter.
