Manuel was a waiter, not a transmission.

Check out Rockauto. Their listings don't have any info about tooth count, but they have Motorcraft starters. If one of those comes out of the box with a 10-tooth gear it must have been redesigned for some reason, and that does happen.

I have tried 2 different 10 tooth starters 1 brand new and another almost new both sounded horrible put my 11 tooth back on and it sounds fine

My next guess would be try moving backward and forward a year, see if that changes anything.

If all else fails you may have to swap your old bendix to the new starter.

We searched all through the years at orilleys even tried auto trans and I took the head and bendix off my old one and the guts out of the new one and put it on cranks fine now
