94 4.0 4x4 new member with problems

just bought the 94 and 4 months in the tranny blew, 112000 on truck , i bought it from a trustworthy place, any thoughts to how it went out and how to keep it from going again? they said it was out of fluid? manual...what? also are ball joint s pretty easy> im pretty mechancicaly inclined and have access to most tools....Any thoughts?

if it was a manual transmission, its an m50d and its most likely leaking from the shift rail plugs.

ball joints arent bad, just a little time consuming. put the front on jack stands, pull the wheels and tires, pull the brakes, disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckles, unbolt and remove the spindles (can be a real pita) unbolt the balljoints and knock the tapers loose. use the proper ball joint press to press them out and put the new ones back in. install in opposite order.
