Hello,

I did a search and couldn't find a specific answer to this question so sorry if this has already been answered.

Anyway... what's happening is when 4x4 is engaged I get a random clunking sound coming from the front of the truck while accelerating. It feels like something is slipping. It will happen multiple times as I accelerate and as far as I can tell it isn't doing this while the truck shifts. I tested it climbing up a fairly steep rock surface which made the clunk far worse.

Anyone know what that would be? The 4x4 and Ranger is new to me so i'm not very knowledgeable yet.

Truck is a 93 Ranger XLT, 3.0, Auto

Thanks for your help!
Mike

If it has auto locking hubs they could be going out. Mine did that when they started to slip.

Hey thanks for the responce.

Yeah they are auto-locking. I'll have to check that out. Was it an expensive fix?

If it is the hubs, and everyone else here will say the same thing, swap them out for the manual locking ones. You would need the hubs and the locknut kit. There are write-ups in the tech library about this.

Alright, thanks for the good advice. I'll be sure to do that.

i think i've read somewhere that they will do that when they get dirty. you can take the covers off and hit them with water/air and they will work again. i could be wrong though, i'm new.
