My brother handed this Ranger to me since when i was 17, My biggest goal with it, is to put a Fuel injected 302 in it. now im 19 and want this goal to happen. But as I was researching, viewing videos and visiting sites, I honestly cant seem to completely understand if its possible with just by myself. I read about the forms on engine swapping a ranger with a 302. So I just want some clarification If i can do it.

I have a late 1992 Ford Ranger xlt. Engine is a 2.3inline4, and a 5 speed manual transmission.
With the Set up that i already have. What are some tips and advice anyone can give me.

The Engine swapping part seems easy to me. But the part I'm heavily confused on is the wiring part and Transmission.
I found this site that sells the wiring harness, Do you guys believe that this harness will work with the truck?

And with the transmission, im pretty sure its a mazda 5speed tranmission. Would I have to replace it or does the transmission work with any 302 engine?

lemmekno what you guys think. and thankyou all

So, the transmission behind the 2.3 that’s currently in there will not work for a 302.

The ideal for Rangers is to use an Explorer or Mountaineer for the swap. The closest to yours is the 95-97 vintage. Unfortunately, there would be a ton of wiring involved. You would need a whole donor.

If wiring is a problem, an option would be to use the Explorer 5.0 and either convert it fully to carb or go to like a Holley Sniper system. There’s an F-150 transmission that’s supposed to work well for staying manual transmission.

The problem with either of those is California. From what I understand engine swaps out there are a nightmare.

A common way to get more out of a Ranger 2.3 back in the day was to get parts off a T-bird or the like that got the 2.3l turbo. That was supposed to be pretty much bolt on…

Outside of medium duty trucks (think box trucks), there are only pockets of interchangeable engines/transmissions. They usually have to go as a set. Sometime there is a group of engines with a common basic design. (Like the 2.9 and 4.0)
