Hi all. I'm new to the forum but an old guy when it comes to Rangers...I've owned 4 through the years ('83, '87, '88, '84 in order of ownership).
Anyway, my 18 year old son recently bought a '91 XLT 2wd that was used as a farm truck for 20+ years, had the original 4.0 replaced with a rebuilt '94 4.0 in 2014..owner drove it 1 year then passed away and the truck sat untouched for 2 years. Flash forward, son buys it for $900, drives it a few months and then trans fluid dumps out the front seal. Refill with fluid the next morning and it runs and shifts fine. I tell him keep it local, keep the speed down and baby it until I have the time to work on it.
Being an 18 year old, he decides that he knows better than Dad and decides to drive to his girlfriend's house 45 miles away...and take I-10 through Houston to get there. Needless to say, trans dumps again...this time leaving him stranded 40 miles from home. I go to get him (at 9pm on Valentine's Day), add fluid, back out, put it in OD and...nothing. No forward gears at all, just reverse. He pays $200 to have it towed home and it's now sitting on jackstands in the driveway while I wait for parts. I've already ordered the Superior VB rebuild kit with HD Boost valve. Have a new front seal, filter and pan gasket. Am I looking at an entire internal rebuild as well or should the VB rebuild and seal replacement take care of it?
