I'm a little stumped on this. I have a 91 Ranger 2.3. It was running fine until a week ago when the check engine light came on. Ran Ok until I shut it off and would not start again. Pulled trouble codes and got codes 28 and 88. Replaced DIS module and vehicle started and ran but check engine light came on and tach went to zero. Stopped engine and pulled codes again and got the same codes 28 and 88. Hopefully I haven't fried another DIS module as this can get expensive. ANy ideas?? could it be the CID/PIP sensor??? Any help would be appreciated. I know its losing IDM as the tach went to zero. I don't have a breakout box but I don't see any problems with the harnesses.

Bad coils can cause the tach to read zero. I'd check those.

Crank sensor would be my guess.

No spark?

No spark. Checked resistance at the coils and they are OK> I'm going to run through some diagnostics this week to see if I can locate the problem.

everything is pointing to the DIS module. Can't figure out what would cause it to go bad. I did check CID and PIP and they are working. The processor is making a SPOUT signal as my LED test lamp blinks when connected. When I check the right side coil pack drivers they are inoperative. Coils are getting battery voltage and both sides check out within resistance measurements. I have checked the harnesses for shorts and found none. I already replaced the ignition module once and I don't want to cough up $$$$ if its going to fry itself again. For the life of me I can't figure out what would cause the ign module to go bad as soon as the vehicle starts up. Checked coil resistance to the secondary and everything is OK on the coil. I am stumped.

I was able to get it started by grounding the DPI wire. It will start and run off the left coil pack but the drivers for the right coil pack are not working in the DIS module. Does anyone have some test specifications for the coils?

Finally got it fixed. The DIS module had gone bad due to one bad spark plug wire which fried the DIS module drivers on the RH side. Put on a new DIS module and new plug wires and its running fine.
