89500 passenger side header...

I used the stock 85-93 Mustang vert mounts. The engine was/is moved back to where the drivers side head has about 3/4" clearance to the firewall. The engine is centered between the fenders. The 89500's drop right into place too, but the elbow being crushed by the axle, plus the starter not being able to be removed without removing the header are the two reasons I went to Tri-Y's, (after trying to modify a 65-66 Mustang 351W swap header to replace the right side). The 88400's solve the problem of the 89500's right side. The 88400 left side is identical to the 89500 left side. We've tried to tell Hedman this, but as Wade already posted, it all fell on deaf ears there.

I used 95 Mustang GT mounts, which I think may be the same as what you used. I just cut holes in the crossmember and bolted them from the bottom. Our installs sound very similar for engine placement.

I would have loved to use the tri-y's but I think it would have taken too much to make them fit around my AOD.

Oh well, I've made it this far with the 89500's, so I'm going to have some exhaust put on it and see how it goes. If it does work out, my elbow is removable for starter replacement.

I just wish someone would make a decent swap header for us...

I got the exhaust ran the other day using the 89500 headers. When the axle hits the bumpstop it's still about 1.5" away from the elbow. I couldn't imagine my bumpstop compressing 1.5" or more. The elbow is completely removable in case I need to swap a starter.

I haven't jumped the truck off a cliff or anything yet, but driving down bumpy country back roads and crossing rail road tracks have not been a problem. Time will tell...

Sorry, no pics yet.

:D Go find the deepest pothole you can find and drive the truck off into it. :icon_confused: You'll be amazed at how different materials react to exteme applications of force. If you can find a WWII submariner, ask him about this.

I can almost guarantee what baddad said about contact crushing that elbow is right on the money. I bought 89500's and had nothing but trouble with the pass side header until I did some playing around with the cutting wheel and welder.

88400's....

And here are my modified 88400's for my P heads

:icon_thumby: You need to send Hedman that picture of the R/S 88400 in your Ranger. :D They'll be doing this: :icon_confused: :dunno::icon_confused: after seeing it. :icon_rofl:

Why the hell can't a big company like Hedmans see the growing market and do something? Looks like a great mod to them headers. Thanks for the pictures!
Dave

Actually from going back and looking again, they could gain another 1/2" (at least) clearance by shortening the tubes, moving the outside of the tubes closer in toward the motor.

Been watching this for a bit and thought I would chime in. I used the 89500 and the only time I ever had any fits was when the engine wasn't quite square in there. Here are a couple of pics(sorry it was dark when I snapped them, if you want more let me know and I'll get some during the day time).

I have wheeled this truck hard enough to break the front lift brackets and I haven't gotten close to the exhaust pipe. The starter falls out on the ground when you take out the two bolts.
Not disputing anyone, just letting you know of my experience with these headers.:icon_welder:

Yours is a 4WD, that's the difference here. We've been arguing here on 2WD's. Big difference in front suspensions. :icon_welder:
