Hey, I just bought an 87 Ranger 2.0.. Its a good truck but theres this problem.. let me explain..

It starts and everything fine.. Its an automatic and it goes into gear fine.. While in drive.. the car wont accelerate until you hit the gas a few times.. then it will go fine and everything will be perfect. Itll do the same thing every time going into drive. reverse and everything works fine with no problems.

Whats going on?

My ranger experience comes from manual transmissions, so I am not 100% sure about these ford autos. I have had this type of symptom on several autos I have owned and worked on. Either there is a internal problem it the transmission or the seals have shrunk to the point that the torque converter drains when the vehicle sits for a while. It takes a few extra seconds to refill the torque converter once the engine starts up. The vehicle hints that it is gear and wants to go. On one vehicle I drained and refilled the transmission with new fluid and some TransX (ATF stop leak/conditioner) and with persistent driving the problem did not recur. Not sure if that will help or hurt the ranger tranny, but my 2 cents. Perhaps just driving it more frequently will help swell the seals and slow the draining.

Ill have to try that TransX stuff out.. I dont really consider it that serious since it only happens when you start it and go into gear. Just hope it doesnt get worse.. lol
