you don't want surge at all. I've seen unscrew the compressor wheel before. I run a megasquirt ecu with a lc1 wideband, 1000cc injectors, holset hx35, 4bar fpr, edis, 4" thick intercooler, ssqv blow off, custom long rods, short pistons, hand built manifold, and a few other things in my 242 volvo.
