Confused and Intolerant
Why are the keys that start the truck, AND lock the truck, different?

Also, what use are the locks if you have to walk around the truck to lock both doors and really NO efficient way of unlocking them from the inside?

I think someone at ford decided to just get tricky with us. My mustang is the same way.

=P the locking mechanism sucks, I am mowing to electric locks as soon as I can, also gonna add a new armrest to the door due to the old one's flimsiness and skimpiness. Its just to small, and I can put a larger one on with controls on it =)

Most cars from the 60s to the early to mid 90s had two separate keys. like you, like the one key does all approach. one nice thing about ford was if you owned two of them, you could have one side of the keys cut for one car and the oyher side cut for the other car.

as for unlocking the doors from the inside, most fords will unlock the front door just from using the door handle

you can't reach over and push down the lock from inside? and unlock by pulling the inside door handle? heck, i do that with my F150.

also, the inside lock rod is threaded, so you can unscrew the short plastic one and screw on a longer one from something else.

i went from an 01 explorer sport with power everything, to an 06 f150 XL with power nothing (not even cruise), and i dont miss any of that power crap. just more stuff to go wrong.

yup. the door lokc are to keep the outside out, not to keep the inside from going out :icon_twisted:

my 78' f150 only has one key but my ranger has 2 it is a pain in the ass but i dont mind it. i've only embarresed myself a couple of times frogetting i locked the doors and tryin to unlock the doors with the iggition key.. in parking lots

The auto makers were so focused on saving pennies per car, the only reason they would provide 2 keys instead of 1 would have to be seen as some big advantage. When gas was cheap and cars were harder to start, people left them idling while they did quick tasks like unloading or loading the trunk. If you were locking / unlocking the doors, you probably were going to turn off the engine, so it kinda made sense to have the trunk and glove box on one key and the doors and ignition on the other. I'll bet there were some terrible disagreements and fights over the issue. I think I could make a case for 1 key that you can remove after you start the car? Cheap and provides the benefits of 2 keys with few downsides. I guess there would be some that would start the car and then lose the key, but it'll stop on it's own given enough time.

I don't like one key that works on all the locks. Maybe you want to have a key made to work on the door, tool box/tonue cover, and glove box. That way you are not leaving a key to everything with the valet parking attendant.

There is the chance that the attendant will lock the door and not be able to open it; that's a downside. To eliminate that, you could have the door lock keyed the same as the ignition, and use a different key for the other locks. I like autos that come with a master key that opens everything, and a separate valet key that only works on the ignition and door.

Just have ones made for door and trunk too (if ignition key does door too- then you only need trunk key done, -- usually glove box key same as trunk key, -- but different than doors or ign. lock! They make them different so "valet" can not get in and "clean out your trunk" in parking lot! Have at least 3 keys of each type made, -- "one for me. one for thee, and one in reserve!"

Now when I lose mine, and you can't find yours, - you have a set saved so you can drive car!

I might have a copy or two made of each just in case.

I do want electric locks though, those are so useful when having a security system, I just want to lock and hear the *beep beep* and done.

of course, willing person that steals my truck better be kind enough to ask for the keys too!

You can have the locks re-keyed for 20 bucks and use one key.

I've always liked two keys, myself. Just made more sense to me. Maybe I'm messed up! :P

the keys are mirrored, the lock key and ignition key types are not interchangable, they won't even fit in each other's slots, so you can't just re-key it.

this gets you into the habit of opening and closing doors for the ladies you will have in your life. :icon_rofl:
