84 b2 alternator wiring

I have an 84 and on mine when i took my alternator wires off they were color coded or at least 2 of them were and the third was obvious, maybe try cleaning off around the posts on the alternator i remember for sure one was bright orange.

I'm having the same issue except for the fact that the previous owner hooked stuff up wrong so I'm trying to get things put back correctly. Alternator has no wiring to it right now so what color wires goto what? I've stared at the wiring diagrams all over the internet tonight and they don't show clearly what color wires are to goto what terminal. Would be nice if there was a simple answer. The ground wire goes to ground I got that far LOL. But from what I've found if you hook stuff up wrong you can fry a few components so what's the proper wiring supposed to be? Everything is still stock 2.8L so what color wires goto what terminals on the alternator? Its externally regulated of course.

My 83 has two wires, large wire black/orange goes to large terminal on alternator the orange terminal on the alternator goes to the voltage regulator orange/lt blu the other wire terminal on the alternater is not used I believe the white/black stripe was terminated at the 8 wire connector my book shows it goes to regulator but stopped at the computer connector it gets about 8 volts when the engine is running and was used for the choke thermostat on older fords.

I have the 2.8L V6 so I'm sure its different. The alternator has the ground, field, battery, and stator connectors so I'm trying to figure out for sure which wires goto what, as I understand this isn't something you can just do trial and error on without getting into some serious problems.

Mines a 1983 2.8 same animal the ground goes to battery neg and is a addo to your engine the other two are same as above. The black is not used the orange to regulator and the larg terminal goes to battery. You allways should check voltage anyway when repairing the charging system you will know immediately if it is not correct you should be reading around 14.5-14.8 volts at the battery at a high idle shortly after starting the motor with tyhe lights and heater on it should read around 13.3 volts. Fully charge the battery prior to starting measure the voltage of the battery no more than two volts over battery voltage or less than .5 volts at a high idle around 1800 rpm.

Thanks so much, just got it hooked up using your wiring colors, works and I'm getting around 14.45 volts with no load and just over 13.2 volts with lights heater on. I appreciate your help. Amazing how much better it works when the alternator is actually charging the battery LOL.

How did you get a 2.8L V6 in your ranger? I thought the 83's were only available with the 4 cylinder? Did you do an engine swap or was that something that came out late in 83?
