So i took out the 4 screws holding it in and it still wouldnt budge...

Feels like really short wires are holding it in?

Anyone have any tips so i can test some stuff out before investing in my new guage set?

there are TWO harness connectors on the back but the really "tight" one is the speedometer cable.

But i couldnt get behind it to diconnect?

Do you have a trick!

You can usually pull a little more speedo cable through the floor grommet, and into the cab. Do this with the cluster unbolted, and it'll push it away from the dash so that you can get your hand behind the cluster to disconnect the cable.

Actually there's a screw clamp where the steering column goes
through the firewall...

Loosen or remove that clamp and you can more easily move any slack in the speedo cable.

BTW to release the speedo cable you squeeze the plastic retainer from the sides,
there is a single "tooth" that grabs a rib in the speedo housing
