8.8 rebuild specs

Yes, grind the tooth. Notched crosspins suck.

You'll be taking 10thou out, not adding it.

Just took 10 thous out of my pinion depth. My current specs are:
.024" pinion shim
.292" NRGS shim
.266" RGS shim
.007" backlash

Pattern looks more centered, pinion depth looks good too. Not too sure about the coast side.

Whatcha think? I'm thinking I should move the pinion in another 5 thous or so to get my coast side better centered and deeper.

I'd take another 10 out and see what that does for you. If it goes way off the board, add 15 back to it.

I'd go thicker shim. It looks too shallow in those pics now.

Pushed the pinion in another .005" and my coast pattern got worse, so i went ahead and came up with:
.028" pinion depth
.292" NRGS
.266 RGS
.007" backlash

I'm thinking this is as good as i'm going to get it. Hope pinion depth doesn't change when i pull out the setup bearings and press on the new ones. Of course i'll be checking backlash and pattern again once thats done but hopefully it will be the last time I remove install the carrier.

One thing I have learned is to make drastic changes...not adding or taking away 5thou....but rather 15-20...then you will see noticeable results.

When you are rolling your pattern are you applying resistance to the ring gear and turning the pinion?

I've been giving it resistance with the plam of my hand the first couple rotations of the ring gear then letting go and going forward like three revs and back 3.

I'll make sure to give it resistance the whole time around, next time. I understand about making drastic changes to see results. From 34 to 20 thous pinion shim, the pattern definately centered, but my coast side seemed to get worse.

At 34, my pattern was heavy on the heel, it looks better here, and going shallower than where it is now hasn't helped me. Do you think this is good to run?

It's a little closer to the toe than I'd like to see. Have you tried playing with the backlash a little? (maybe try around .010")?
