I'm doing an Explorer axle swap for a school project. The issue I'm running into is that I need some "Expert" refrances. If anyone is willing to send some pointers or have their name mentioned in my sources I would be very thankful. Just PM me if you want to help.
Thanks,
Sutherland

what do you need said? just swapped a 8.8 LS with 4.56 gears into my truck that was custom built.

I'm in the middle of this swap (I've been in the middle of it for a year or so now). I have a good idea of what I'm doing though.

I'll ref up for you. I've even got me some pro-fess-ional credentials if it helps.

Have you guys run into any issues with the stock ranger master cylinder?
And do you think there are any draw backs to the swap?

drawback, not really. costs a bit more when you need to do brakes, but it stops better.

as for the master cylinder, its mentioned you need the correct proportioning valve, as drums are supposed to use less fluid to stop, but i havent heard problems from anyone using the original.

cost is really the only draw back, as my rear axle after replacing the seals and fluid cost me $500 total.

The original brake master does indeed work properly. In fact we have seen issues caused with this swap when people try to swap the Explorer master cylinder over as well because the pedal arm has the wrong throw then and doesn't apply the brakes completely.

Proper proportioning valve is the only thing that is really an issue. And the right brake hoses.

Advantages far outweigh the costs since you get improved stopping and ease of repairs. The parking brake shoes present an issue as they tend to come unbonded and the rotors get stuck on them when the 'hat' edge rusts up and gets a lip.

I see what you're saying about the parking brake. The one on my axle is mostly red dust.

Make sure you set proper pinion angle, wait til the axles under the vehicle to weld on the shock mounts ( so you can get them in the right place ), and it its 4x4 make sure the gears match the front (duh)

So just an update. I've moved and rewelded the spring mounts, I'm getting ready to weld the tubes to the diff housing, and I'm planning on using the trailing link mounts from the explorer axle as shock mounts.
