8.8/D44 Hybrid Build Thread...w/PIC's

Its quality craftsmanship like this that reminds me that I am a hack with lots still left to learn. I would be interested to see if this could be done with a d60 rear for cheaper than buying a d60 front.

Did you get inspiration for this from the show Xtreme 4x4?
I know they did the same thing, but I think they used a GM 14 bolt rear.

I'd like to see the rig that this is going under one day!
You'll need to make it to one of our 4wd runs someday!

This might be a stupid question from an axel noob. but I didn't know they made reverse cut 8.8 gears to get that axle turning in the right direction and contacting the proper side of the teeth? I am loving the idea though plese enlighten on how this works

I have the housing sitting under the truck right now, I had to take a break from fabbing and get all of the TTB stuff out of the way.

I found some caliper brackets and spindles for my knuckles. Im going to build a jig so that I can machine my flat tops on my mill and build some arms.

I havent seen the Extreme show where he built the 14b front , but ever since I started this axle I have heard about it, and Im interested to see it. I just thought it would be different to build an 8.8 front, and with the abundance of parts out there I figured it could be done fairly cheaply. The shaft diameter of a 31 spline 8.8 is the same as a 30 spline D44, so all Ill have to do is have D44 shafts splined to match the 8.8.

I dont have to have reverse cut gears, because it is a low pinion housing. Normally a low pinion housing would be weaker because the pinion would be "pulling" away from the ring gear instead of pushing against it like it would be in a high pinion setup, this is what contributes to the 10-20% disadvantage. however, I dont think it will be any weaker than an HP44 because the tooth contact is so much greater with 8.8 gears over a D44, it looks to me like there could be up to 50% more contact on the tooth surface itself.

Im gonna bust loose on my build here very soon, i wanna have this thing driveable this summer. Ill keep you posted.

Haven't seen any updates in a while with this one.

Hows it coming along?

Still working on it, just been busy.
Ill get some stuff up as soon as i can.

Good to hear! Thought you might have given up on it.

Looks like I am going to have to bag this project. I been informed that I am loosing my job next week, and that was where the majority of my fabrication would have to take place, I just dont have the tools to do this sort of project at my shop.

Sorry guys.

I would hope somebody would take this project on someday, I think it would be cool to see the front end in action.

wow that sucks brother. just hold onto the parts.

I wish I could, but I have to sell my parts I was saving for it. A D35 is going back in my truck for now.

Maybe in the future when things get better, I will attempt the project again, but I dont know what is in for me in the near future.
