8.8 axle question

Ya I know what happened to yours. Did you get your money back? It's ok though. You guys can use this thread as a reference if you want. No problem.

hmmm..... complete '05 Fx4 Level II 31spline with torsen with only 38,000 on the clock WITH C grade leafs and spring plates and ubolts and nuts for $150.

The axle I was going to use....'99 Explorer complete disc to disc 3.73LS w/ unknown mileage for a whopping $60. Sold that for $300 to some jeeper. LOL!

Dang.. $300

Where did you find an 05 FX4 for $150..

My 8.8 came off the 99 with 46k on it...

Couple questions...
Whats the stock gear in my new 8.8? i dont know if it was auto or manual... it was a 99
With this 8.8 what would be the best leaf to use for it? the ones it came with was 1 HUGE thick leaf... and 1 of the was bent when he took it off i guess... is aw that and jaw dropped asking how THE F did you bend that sucker

Take the cover off it, count how many teeth are on the pinion(the one deep in there that the drive shaft bolts to), then count the teeth on the ring gear(the big one the shafts slide into). Take the ring count and divide by the pinion count = gear ratio. It's most likely a 3.73.

Your axle came from a 2dr Sport Explorer...it's called a monoleaf. I would'nt run it on a Ranger. IDK what to run on those older Rangers....I know 98+ trucks...and my K leafs have treated me well with LOTS of travel...but sagged way too much with just a little bit of weight back there. C leafs are standard on tow package trucks, and the highest spring rate for the Rangers(98+ though).

I got a local hook up at the (what I call) "new car junkyard". They didn't know what they had...but I knew!! Same way I got my '02 Fx4 twin stick case for $60. and my '03 Fx4LII buckets for $75. Along with tons of other stuff. It's unfortunate, he doesn't work there anymore. :(

Must be nice! I looked on craiglist, called around, that car-parts.com site. It was the cheapest I found out of an 00 4x4 Off-Road package Ranger. 87,000 miles. I still had to drive over 2 hours to get it. Rangers are a dime a dozen around here but not many parts are in the junkyard. The last time I went to one local yard they had 1 Ranger and it was only 2wd and pretty much gone. The other local yard had 2 that were also pretty much stripped except the cab and the frame it was bolted to. I can't believe some of the stuff I see you guys picking up for cheap. Shit's expensive around here!!!

There's also a tag on the rear diff cover. What are the numbers on that?

Blah...if the axle came from a yard that you can pick your own parts, the likelyhood of there still being a tag is quite low. lol.

No it came off a wrecked exlporer that only had like 46k or something...
Ill look at the tag when im off work...

Dang man you scored at that yard for sure!
out of an 05 lol thats sick...

I wanna start looking for leafs now lol... hmmm got me thinkin!

If you are happy with your stock springs you can use them on the 8.8 if you like, or you can put regular 4dr Explorer springs in if you want some extra beef.

He is a lucky SOB. He also has a 4.0 out of a 06 Ranger with 1,000 miles on it. I bet I paid more for just my truck than he did for all the shit he's done to his. :icon_rofl::thefinger:

tom , i have not gotten my money back yet , i have yet to even contact the guy , been way to busy with all my other shit , and he will prolly pull a 30/30 guarantee on me

Ya. I hate to see you get f**ked over like that though. I put a dump on my muffler. The damn things too quiet now. :annoyed:

I've got my 8.8 and what not but now I have a question about the axles. I've seen some posts saying that the 7.5 axles also work because they are the same axles. If anyone can clarify that I will be keeping them as spares. Next question is this: Will the 31 spline 8.8 axle shafts work in the rear end even though it came with 28 spline axle shafts? It may seem like a dumb question but I haven't seen anyone ask the same question.

A 28 spline 8.8" can be converted to 31 using custom shafts that have the smaller wheel bearing journal (I did this on my Ranger's 8.8 way back in '97). Of course this also means you can't just go down to your local junkyard to find a spare replacement shaft anymore. You also don't get the GAWR benefit the larger bearings would give you.

If you want 31 splines, I would go the Explorer axle route. The 28 spliners are not exactly all that weak though (probably close to that of a 30 spline D44 shaft).

I'm just going to stick with my 28 spline 8.8. $266 is a pretty penny. I hate to see what the Explorer 8.8 sells for around here.
