unless you already own the 6x9's I'd stick with 6x8's just because the difference is minimal at best. If I were you I'd actually get 6.5" component sets instead of either of those two.
I see where you're coming from though. decent 6x8's more expenxive than most 6x9's and the 6x9's sound better/have better low end sound. 6.6 aren't even really a fair consideration (imo) unless you run a sub/subs.
I too would like to know if it can be done. I seem to remember someone around here dremeling the hole out to fit but I can't be certain of that.
It cane be done look around on line and even here people in different threads have given links to sites that make a type of speaker adapter that makes it fit i did a google search and found this http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=1293. As far as i know you do not have to modify the original hole in the door to make them work it says in the product description that it does add some depth to the over all speaker. I am sure if you do a more extensive search you may be able to find some more and possibly cheaper but i don't think 20 bucks is bad for a pair. The site makes them for just about any application to convert different size to the factory hole.
i put some in the rear of mine since on in the door when out i took one from the rear to put in the door. i pretty much just bolted to top two bolts in and took a knife and cut the bottom part of the plastic larger so it would fit they sound good and dont move around i just couldnt find a pair of 6x8's at any stores around here.
