Looking at the back of the one in my 2001, I note a second, square plug. Above the top row of pins is a number. Below the bottom row of pins it says "Amp." Is this for an add on amp or separate changer or whatever?

In the mustang and the ranger tremor, the stereo system comes with amps installed. So if you would like to take the time and chase down all the wiring out of a stang or ranger tremor you could install the pug and play amp.

Unless your hell bent on keeping everything "stock" you'd be much further ahead in sound quality and head aches by just buying an aftermarket head unit, speakers, and a 12disk changer.

Kinda want to go back to stock...

Got a Clarion head unit, a 6-disc, a parametric equalizer, and a 4 channel amp, all Clarion. Just wanted to go back to stock.

My XLT has an amp behind the passenger seat. Doesn't do much IMO, but it's there.

I thought the newer radio's sound pretty good.

As much as I am against stock anything, unless you have a LOT of time and love wires/wiring, just get your self a stock HU that plugs into the OE plug. The OE amps are worth less then the materials there made out of.

Yes the stock head unit sucks!

I hooked it up and wow. SO put the Clarion back in. This time direct wired an XM receiver. Much, much better sound than the antenna thing.

So you were all correct. Aftermarket is great, stock is, well, tollerable.
